About Columbia Ballroom. The Columbia University Ballroom Dance Team offers weekly classes with renowned professional dance instructors in International Standard and Latin, as well as Social dancing classes. The team offers a casual atmosphere with the opportunity to experience both the social and competitive aspects of ballroom dance.

Our mission is to provide the best opportunity and environment for members to develop and hone their dancing skills and to share their interests in ballroom dancing. We are a social, fun-loving organization that supports its members in their quest to dance and perform better. No partner or prior dance experience is necessary to join the team.

Congratulations to everyone who competed at UPenn! Results are below. Here are a couple of quick announcements:

Practice Space Midtown (Broadway between 31st and 32nd -- 1261 Broadway Suit 309)

Teresa just let us know about a new space available for practice in midtown that is $18/hr. The space is run by a 501(c)(3) nonprofit called Rhythm Break Cares and a large amount of the proceeds will go toward funding their mission (using ballroom dance as Alzheimers/dementia therapy!) so it is a great cause! To book and to get this rate, or if you have any questions, please contact the studio at info@nypartnerdance.com or 646 742 1520 and mention Teresas name (Teresa Lii).

Here are the times it is available:

  • Monday 9 AM to 4:30 PM + 8:20 to 10:30 PM (arrive before 10 PM)
  • Tuesday 9 AM to 4:30 PM
  • Wednesday 9 AM to 4:30 PM
  • Thursday 9 AM to 4:30 PM
  • Friday 9 AM to 4:30 PM + 7:30pm to 10:30 PM (arrive before 10 PM)

Hello Ballroom Friends,

We are still collecting dues this week, so please come early to class if you have not paid.

Dues Collection

This is the last week we will be collecting dues, so if you want to take classes/practice in Dodge, compete with us, or have signed up for the mentorship program, make sure to pay this week! (cash preferred, check also accepted)

  • CUID (student or affiliate) - $80 for one track, $120 for two tracks, and $150 for three tracks (each price is per semester).
  • non-CUID - $120 for one track, $150 for two tracks, and $180 for three tracks (each price is per semester).
Last note (for Columbia students w/CUID only): In order to officially be a member of CU Ballroom, please fill out the form here for club sports.

Competition Workshop (Thursday, Feb 19th 10:30pm, at practice)

Questions about what happens at competitions? New to ballroom? Going to UPenn? Come to our workshop, and we will go over everything you need to know : ) We will be holding rounds right after (11pm), stimulating a competition schedule and timing, and that will be a fantastic way for you to practice/prep for UPenn, so stay for that as well!

Hair/Makeup Night (Friday, Feb 20th, 9-10pm, Schapiro Room 109 (605 West 115th St.) map here)

We will go over hair, makeup, and outfits for competitions - if you have questions about a specific outfit, especially for UPenn, bring it! If you do not know how to do ballroom hair yourself, we highly encourage you to come learn. For those of you going to UPenn, this will be our chance to help you prep your hair tonight itself.

Make sure to bring: hair ties, bobby pins, hair nets (these are really important! You can buy them at Rickys), and a comb (fine tooth is ideal)

Feel free to bring: makeup, nail stuff, gel, and hairspray

UPenn (Saturday, Feb 21st)

Is this weekend - get excited! To those of you going, we will send out an email with an itinerary so stay tuned. If you are going to UPenn and you have not received an email from us by Monday night, then please let me know!

Hello Ballroom Friends,

We are collecting dues this week before classes, so please come early to class! That said, if you would still like to explore, you do not need to pay in full yet - Monday is still free, and Tuesday and Friday are only $10 for a trial class!

Partner Match (Thursday Febrary 12th, 11pm at practice)

Newcomers, this is a great way to meet other beginners and find someone to practice with! We ask that everyone who is planning on coming on Thursday (or is looking for a partner in general), to please sign up here by Thursday February 12th, 8pm. Feel free to reach out to Sheryl (szc2103@columbia.edu) if you have any questions! We cannot guarantee that everyone will find a partner, but we will do our best to help.

Shoe Shopping Trip (Sunday, Febrary 15th, noon)

We will going downtown to WorldTone shoes - Dance shoes are a great investment to make, especially for those of you who plan to compete, and make dancing much easier in general. Sign up (and check out details) here by Sunday, February 15th, 10am so we can contact you if needed : ) If you prefer to meet us downtown at World Tone, that is fine too! Just be sure to indicate that when you sign up.

Dues Collection

Dues paying members get access not only to our classes taught by professional instructors, but also to several other benefits:

You can mix and match whichever tracks you like! (Standard, Latin, or Social)

Mentorship Program (Deadline to sign up Friday, Feb 13th, 11:59pm)

We would like to officially invite you guys to sign up for our mentorship program here. This program is an amazing opportunity to work with an advanced dancer one-on-one each week and we highly encourage it for those who want to be more involved in ballroom or want to compete. Details are in the sign up form.

Please fill out the form EVEN IF:

  • You signed up last semester, and want to continue
  • Your partner signed up, but you have not
  • You indicated you wanted to sign up in the partner match form but have not filled out this form
**Open level dancers who join as mentors will not have to pay dues to the club, and will get full travel expenses to and from competitions covered (in addition to the already covered competition fees).**

Mentorship Meet and Greet (Sunday, Feb 15th, 3-4PM at practice)

We will have our first meet and greet between our Newcomer/Bronze dancers and their Silver/Gold mentors on Sunday, so make sure to put this on your calendars if you have signed up for the program!

UPenn (Feb 21st)

Our first team competition of the semester is small and close by, so we encourage everyone (especially newcomers) to sign up!
